You’ve just scored the perfect pin, brooch, or unique button cover from Just the Jacket. Congratulations! Our collection is curated with love and care to give your outfit that perfect finishing touch.
Many of our textile jewellery pieces feature beautiful metal elements. Because not everything in our collection is made of stainless steel, they deserve a little extra attention. With these professional maintenance tips, you can prevent discoloration and wear, ensuring your accessories maintain their shine and color for years.
1. Keep them dry: Avoid water and moisture
The golden rule for your Just the Jacket accessories is simple: keep them dry. While stainless steel is durable, other metals can oxidize or tarnish when exposed to moisture.
-
Sports and weather: Remove your accessories before working out or taking a long walk in the rain.
-
Beauty routine: Be careful with perfume, hairspray, and body lotion. These products can cause a chemical reaction. Apply your perfume and let your beauty products dry completely before pinning your jewelry on.
2. Clean smart (without water!)
Has your favorite pin, brooch, or button cover lost its shine? Skip the harsh cleaning agents and silver polish; they often do more harm than good.
-
Microfiber is your best friend: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth (like a lens cloth) to gently wipe away dust and fingerprints.
-
Hard-to-reach spots: Is there dust stuck in the fine details of a pin? Use a soft, dry toothbrush to gently brush the dirt away.
3. The best place to store: Dark & Dry
Did you know that metal can react to oxygen and direct sunlight? Leaving your jewellery on a windowsill can cause them to tarnish faster.
-
Storage advice: Keep your pins, brooches, and button covers in a closed jewellery box or a small container.
-
Dark and separate: Store them in a dark place. Pro-tip: store your accessories in separate compartments. This prevents them from scratching against each other.
4. Extra care for your clasps
A pin or brooch is an accessory you wear on your clothing, which is why the clasp is essential.
-
Butterfly clasp: Occasionally check if the backing still grips the pin tightly.
-
Magnetic clasps: Our brooches with magnets are a great choice for your clothes, but handle them with care. Always slide the magnet sideways off the fabric instead of pulling it straight off. This is better for the magnet itself and protects the fibers of your favorite jacket.
5. Caring for your sleeve garters
Our fabric sleeve garters are designed for daily comfort. Because the fabric and elastic are sensitive to heavy washing, we recommend freshening them up only when absolutely necessary.
-
No washing machine: The heat and spinning of a washing machine can damage the fine fibers and elasticity.
-
Hand wash: Need to wash them? Do so gently by hand in lukewarm water with a drop of mild detergent.
-
Natural drying: Let them air dry lying flat. Never use the dryer and avoid direct, bright sunlight to prevent the fabric from fading.
-
Note: Sleeve garters with attached charms cannot be washed.
